About Haj Deputation
Each year the KSA hosts around 40 lakh pilgrims from across the globe. Out of this huge lot of pilgrims, India sends the third largest contingent of pilgrims in the world. Except for the COVID-19 prevalent years of 2020, 2021, and 2022; India’s usual Haj quota hovers at around 1,75,000 and was granted a spectacular quota of 1,75,025 pilgrims in 2023 & 2024. Out of all the Indian pilgrims around 4,314 women pilgrims participated in Haj without a Mehram i.e. a male companion in 2023. Although the Saudi Arabian authorities are functionaries to the custodians of the two holy sites Makkah Al Mukarramah and Medina Al Munnawarah and cater to the overall healthcare needs of the pilgrims; each country also caters to the health needs of its own pilgrims.
With a view to ensure quality health support to pilgrims, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) in collaboration with the Ministry of Minority Affairs (MoMA) makes comprehensive health arrangements for Indian Haj pilgrims. The Emergency Medical Relief Division & International Health Division of the Directorate General of Health Services, MoHFW are responsible for the medical care arrangement.
In order to ensure quality health support to pilgrims and to ensure proper care for the health risks in KSA, a Comprehensive Plan of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare is in place.
The Government medical and paramedical professionals are deputed at the various healthcare facilities established at the pilgrimage sites who cater to the basic healthcare needs, emergencies, provide OPD and IPD care along with first aid care. The combined efforts of DteGHS MoHFW, MoMA, CGI Jeddah, Doctors and Paramedics posted in KSA, WHO India and all the stakeholder departments who contribute their technical inputs and support the whole operation leads to the successful completion of Haj.
The deputation of health care workers for Haj is done by seeking nominations from various States/UTs and various government institutes. A DO Letter is shared with the States/UTs and institutions mentioning general conditions for the nominations and deputation.
